How to Color Match Extensions

When choosing clip-in extensions that will match your hair color, focus on the shade of your hair from the chin down to the ends of your hair. Only choose extensions that match the color of your hair’s roots if you are intentionally growing out your natural color.

Hair strands may have multiple shades; in that case, you need two or three shades to blend with your hair naturally. If you can’t decide between different shades, the best option is to order hair swatches in the range closest to your hair color to try shades out. You can get blonde, brunette, red shades, or a full-color ring.

Try the swatches until you find the one that beautifully blends with your hair’s shades. Overlap the swatches to the bottom of your hair to get an accurate match, then snap a few photos with each swatch to get a better look.

Dyeing extensions is not recommended but you may use gentle toners and purple shampoos to fix brassy tones. Dyeing your hair to match the extensions is also an option. It is best to use semi- or demi- permanent dyes that are designed to tone your hair one or two shades lighter or darker.

• Take the pictures in natural light with no filter. I recommend standing next to a window as the light should be bright but indirect.
• Snap photos from at least three angles – front, side, and back. For the front view, make sure your hair is parted where you usually would, and have your locks in front of your shoulders so the color match stylist can get a good view. For the side view, either side works, but make sure a good amount of your hair is viewable. For the back view, have most of your hair behind your shoulders so the color-matching specialist can see the length and the shades of your hair.

After you send the photos, the color-matching expert will contact you to ask a few follow-up questions just to make sure you purchase the perfect extensions for your natural hair.
