5 Post-Swimming Hair Hacks for After You Leave the Water

Posted on September 20, 2026 By Marissa Walker

Your hair is putting in serious work every time you hit the water. Give it the reset it needs.

A full day in the ocean or the pool is all kinds of fun until you catch a glimpse of your hair on the way out. Salt water pulls moisture from the shaft, chlorine strips your natural oils, and the sun speeds the whole process up. Left untreated, that combination leads to dryness, breakage, and serious dullness.

We’ve found the top 5 post-swimming hair care hacks to keep your tresses healthy even after salt or chlorine exposure. Add these to your beach bag and use them every single time.

Tip 1: Conditioner and Protective Braids

Wet hair is fragile hair, that part is non-negotiable. When your hair is saturated, the shaft swells and the cuticle lifts, making every strand far more vulnerable to snapping under tension. Add in continuous sun exposure and repeated wetting throughout the day, and you have a damage combo that adds up fast.

The fix is surprisingly simple. Once you’re out of the water, spritz a generous amount of conditioner through your hair from mid-length to ends. The conditioner coats and temporarily seals the cuticle, reducing friction and slowing moisture loss. Then braid your hair — any style works, but a standard three-strand or rope braid keeps strands from rubbing against each other and tangling in the wind. Finish by throwing on a hat to block direct sun from baking already-stressed hair. As a bonus, this is also one of the smartest waterproof hairstyles you can pull off at the beach with zero tools.

Tip 2: Anti-Chlorine Routine

Chlorine is a sanitizer, which means its whole job is to break things down — and unfortunately, it doesn’t stop at bacteria. It strips the proteins that keep your hair strong, depletes natural oils, and over time causes color to fade, strands to go brittle, and ends to split. If you swim in a pool regularly without addressing this, the damage compounds quickly.

Step 1: Rinse it out as fast as you can. Head straight to the shower and spend a full two to three minutes massaging warm water through your hair and scalp. The sooner you flush the chlorine out, the less time it has to work its way deeper into the shaft.

Step 2: Use a gentle daily shampoo if you need to wash. A micellar shampoo or a sulfate-free formula is your best bet here. These cleanse without stripping, which matters enormously when you’re washing your hair every day. A harsh clarifying shampoo works for occasional deep cleaning, but reaching for it daily will leave your scalp dry and your hair worse off than the chlorine alone. This two-step rinse-and-wash approach is a core part of any solid summer hair care routine for swimmers.

Tip 3: Air-Dry Cream and Leave-In Conditioner Combo

Salt water is sneaky. It feels like a texture boost in the moment, but it also pulls moisture straight out of your hair as it dries, leaving strands rough, tangled, and parched. The first thing you should do after getting out of the ocean is pour fresh water over your hair if you have it. This dilutes the salt concentration sitting on the cuticle and slows the drying process significantly.

If you don’t have fresh water on hand, go straight to your products. An air-dry cream with UV protection is the move here. It tames frizz, smooths the cuticle, and creates a barrier against sun damage while your hair dries naturally. Follow immediately with a leave-in conditioner to lock in moisture and add slip so detangling is easier later.

These two products work together because the cream handles texture and UV defense while the leave-in handles hydration, covering both bases at once. Look for both when browsing styling products for summer. The worst thing you can do is let salt water sit in your hair until it air-dries on its own with nothing in it.

Tip 4: Detangling Spray Trick

Salt water and chlorine both cause the outer cuticle to roughen and lift, which is exactly why your hair knots so aggressively after a swim. Trying to comb through it dry is a fast track to breakage. Forcing a brush through wet, tangled strands with nothing in them is equally bad.

A detangling spray changes everything. Apply it generously while your hair is still wet, then use a wide-tooth comb and work from the ends upward in small sections. The spray coats each strand and reduces friction dramatically, so the comb glides rather than catches.

It also buys you time, keeping hair pliable and workable while you sort through knots without snapping anything. This one step cuts down breakage significantly, especially if you’re swimming daily.

Tip 5: Hair Mask Routine

Swimming every day while also planning to style your hair for the evening is a real commitment, and your hair will need the support to keep up. A nourishing mask at least twice a week is non-negotiable at that level of exposure. Daily dips in chlorinated or salt water pull out so much moisture and structural protein that a regular conditioner alone just won’t cut it.

A hair mask works differently from a conditioner because it penetrates deeper into the cortex rather than just coating the surface. It seals the cuticle, which is what gives you that glassy shine after your hair dries, and replenishes the proteins that chlorine and saltwater break down over time.

Apply it on your post-swim wash days after shampooing, leave it in for at least five to ten minutes, and rinse with cool water to close the cuticle back down. Fit this into your rotation alongside the other hacks above, and your hair will hold up far better across a full summer of hair trends for summer and daily swims.

Salt water and chlorine are two of the harshest things your hair faces all summer, but none of the damage is inevitable. Start with a conditioner-and-braid combo right out of the water, rinse chlorine out fast with a gentle shampoo, follow up with your air-dry cream and leave-in duo, detangle before combing, and commit to a deep mask twice a week.

Do all five and your hair stays in the game all season.
